The Sweepa® difference

Natural rubber vs TPR.

01Two materials

Two materials, two very different stories.

Natural rubber and thermoplastic rubber (TPR) are both sold as cleaning tools, but they come from very different places. Here is what each material actually is.

The Sweepa® standard

What is natural rubber?

Tapped from living rubber trees as liquid latex, with an elastic memory that holds its shape for years.

It is tapped as liquid latex from living rubber trees that keep on growing. No tree is cut down. The bristles snap back to shape use after use, so one broom lasts for years, not weeks.

  • Does it wear out? Not for years; the elastic memory holds.
  • Is it safe? Gentler on sensitive skin: natural rubber avoids the synthetic materials and processing chemicals that most often cause irritation. It still contains natural latex proteins, so check with your doctor if you have a diagnosed latex allergy.
  • Why pay more? One Sweepa® outlasts many synthetic brooms.

Good for the planet, too

A single rubber tree absorbs approximately one tonne of CO₂ over a thirty-year productive life.

The industry standard

What is TPR?

A petroleum-based thermoplastic that imitates rubber but lacks its elastic memory.

Thermoplastic rubber is made from petroleum and crude oil. It looks like rubber on day one, but it has no real memory. Bristles bend, stay bent, and the broom is discarded.

  • Does it wear out? Fast; bristles warp permanently.
  • Is it safe? Sheds microplastics with every sweep.
  • Why is it cheaper? You rebuy it again and again.

The true cost over time

TPR is manufactured from petroleum and crude oil, while natural rubber is harvested from living trees, and TPR sheds microplastics with every use.

03Side by side

The honest comparison.

The table below compares natural rubber and TPR across the factors that matter most in a cleaning tool.

Yes, biodegradable; breaks down naturally over time
No, breaks into microplastics
Microplastics
Does not shed microplastics in the way petroleum-based synthetics do
High shedding rate with friction
Carbon Impact
Grown on trees that absorb CO₂ as they grow
High emission manufacturing
Hypoallergenic
Avoids the synthetic materials and processing chemicals that most often cause skin irritation
Often contains chemical sensitisers
Antibacterial

Prone to bacterial growth in pores
Elastic Memory
Exceptional, returns to original shape
Poor, permanently deforms over time
Chemical Resistance
Moderate to Good
Varies, often degrades with cleaners
Lifespan
Years of heavy, daily use
Short, requires frequent replacement
End of Life
Breaks down naturally over time
Landfill or incineration
Origin
Tapped on managed tropical plantations
Refined from crude oil in petrochemical plants

04Try it

The bend test.

Elastic memory is the difference you feel. Bend each bristle and let it go. Natural rubber's interwoven polymer chains bounce back; TPR is a plastic that bends under stress, and every bend leaves a little more of a kink.

Natural rubberSprings straight back, every time.
TPR / syntheticKeeps a little of every bend.

Drag a bristle sideways, then let go. Try it a few times.

05The hidden cost

The hidden cost of synthetic rubber.

Every time a TPR broom is dragged across concrete, microscopic plastic fragments break off. These fragments wash into our drains, flow into our oceans, and eventually make their way into the food chain.

11M+

Tons of plastic

enter our oceans every single year.

Microplastics found

Microplastics were detected in the blood of most donors tested in a 2022 study.

Hundreds

Of years to degrade

The amount of time a single synthetic TPR broom will sit in a landfill before breaking down.

06Why TPR falls short

Why TPR falls short in cleaning.

Select any point to see why synthetic rubber lets you down. It is not just the planet that loses; your cleaning does too.

Loses Shape Quickly

Natural rubber has interwoven polymer chains that bounce back. TPR is a plastic that bends under stress. After a few weeks of heavy sweeping, TPR bristles stay permanently bent and warped; the broom becomes useless long before it is worn out.

Traps Bacteria

Natural rubber is naturally antibacterial and non-porous. As TPR degrades it develops microscopic cracks that become breeding grounds for bacteria and mould, so the tool starts to smell and becomes unhygienic over time.

Poor Chemical Tolerance

Household cleaners and floor detergents can react with thermoplastic blends, making them stiffen, crack, or turn gummy. Natural rubber holds its integrity against standard domestic cleaning agents.

Inferior Dust Capture

Natural rubber rubbing against a surface builds a slight static charge that attracts lint, hair and fine dust. TPR struggles to generate that field, so it often just pushes dust around instead of picking it up.
